Start with the Ending

To answer the question of how to achieve significant growth in online sales, let's start at the end of the process. Once all the necessary pieces are in place (see below), performance monitoring and adjustments are what win the day. Another words, it's the ability to expertly look at what is working and why that provides a solid foundation for achieving sales growth.

So let's look at how to get there.

Marketing Strategy

If you are wondering, "how to do online sales?", the first step is an effective marketing strategy. The marketing strategy provides the structure needed to create results with online advertising, web design, and ongoing performance monitoring and adjustments. Some important questions to ask are:

  • Who are my ideal customers?
  • Out of my list of potential customers, which ones are the most profitable?
  • How do you think these people are searching for your products and/or services online?

With questions like these, the necessary structure begins to outline itself. One of the keys to achieving growth in online sales is to think like the customer! What problem is the customer having that you have a solution for?

Sales Funnels

Once you have an online marketing strategy that defines who your customers are, what they are looking for, how they're going to enter your site, and what will take them through to the sale, you have the essence of your sales funnel.

Sales funnels should always be designed before any kind of design work or copywriting takes place. Given the chance, I define the funnels before building a web site for my clients.

Pay Per Click Advertising

Pay per click advertising on sites like Google Adwords and Facebook can be very effective.

In the example below, the client spent approximately $300 in PPC advertising (Google Adwords) over 6.5 months and acheived a revenue of $2,906.

That's an approximately 10x return on ad spending!

Note that these figures represent only 18.3% of total site traffic. So the majority of this business's revenue is still coming from organic traffic even though their adwords campaign is highly successful.

Note the high number of pages per visit and low bounce rate.

Poorly managed, this kind of advertising can be an unnecessary drain on a business' resources. Don't let this happen to you!

In this example of a new client I have just taken on, you can see that over the past twelve years, they have spent $63,351 in advertising at an average cost per conversion of $111.29. That's really terrible - especially considering their product sells for $89.

What we see here are the deleterious effects of operating without a marketing strategy and performance analysis. Those stats really make me cringe!

Again, the key is to have a clear, overarching marketing strategy against which you can test various permutations of keywords, ad copy, and website and landing page performance.

Organic Traffic Is King

Of course traffic that you don't have to pay for is the best kind of traffic. Success with organic traffic is just as dependent on a coherent, dynamic marketing strategy.

Why? Because knowing your customers is the key to success and the marketing strategy is where your customer profiles are clearly delineated, along with the action flow related to each sales funnel. The more clearly you understand what your customers are looking for, the more relevant content you can produce which drives your organic traffic!

How to Increase Sales Online

As stated above, performance monitoring provides the crucial key in shaping your advertising, landing pages, website design, and even checkout process in ways that will make you the "go to" resource for your customer base. To increase internet sales, you need someone who can quickly and effectively cull the relevant performance data and make intelligent suggestions regarding what that information is telling you about your advertising, your website, and even your business. The end result is an efficient marketing and sales system which creates ever growing profit margins for you the business owner.
